Choosing a bill splitter app: what actually matters

Most bill splitter apps look alike in the store. These five things decide whether the bill gets split in a minute at the table or argued about for a week.

Split a receipt

1. Your friends should not need the app

The biggest point of failure is asking four people to install an app and make an account before dessert. A shared link that opens in any phone browser removes that step entirely.

2. Receipt scanning you can check

AI receipt scans are good but not perfect; even makers of receipt apps admit their scans can be off. Look for an app that compares the lines it read with the printed subtotal and tells you when they do not match, and lets you fix any line.

3. Tax and tip by share, not evenly

A fair split puts tax, tip and service charges in proportion to what each person ordered, and handles shared dishes. Check that the shares add up to the exact bill, to the cent.

4. Getting paid back

The split is only done when the money arrives. The best apps generate a message per person with their amount and a Venmo, Cash App or PayPal link filled in.

5. No limit that ambushes you

Daily caps and countdowns tend to bite exactly when you need the app most, on a trip. Prefer a clear monthly allowance and a fair price to unlock more.

How SplitSlip does on that list

  • Friends join with a link, no install, no account.
  • AI reads items, tax and tip, and checks them against the printed subtotal.
  • Proportional tax and tip, shared items, exact-cent rounding.
  • Pay links for Venmo, Cash App and PayPal with the amount filled in.
  • 3 free splits a month, no daily limit; Pro is $4.99 a month for unlimited, saved groups and trip totals.

It also comes as an app for iPhone and Android if you prefer one, but nobody at the table needs it.
