The Splitwise free limit, and how to keep splitting without it
Free Splitwise accounts can only add a few expenses a day, with a timer between them. Here is what that means and what you can do instead.

What the free limit is
On the free plan, Splitwise restricts how many expenses you can add per day (reported by users as around 3 to 4) and shows a waiting countdown before adding each one. Unlimited expenses, receipt scanning and itemization require Splitwise Pro. The exact numbers have changed over time, so check the app for the current rules.
Why it hurts most on trips
A weekend away easily produces ten receipts a day: breakfast, coffee, tickets, groceries, dinner, drinks. A daily cap means somebody keeps a note on their phone and enters everything days later, which is exactly the job the app was supposed to do.
Ways around it
- Batch expenses. Combine a day's small costs into one expense. It works, but you lose the detail of who had what.
- Have different people enter expenses. Each account has its own limit. Clunky, and everyone needs the app.
- Pay for Pro. Fair if you rely on the long-term ledger.
- Use a receipt-first tool for meals. SplitSlip has no daily limit. Snap a receipt, share a link, friends claim their items in the browser. Free covers 3 receipts a month; friends who join never count against anything.
Trips without a cap
SplitSlip Pro ($4.99 a month) gives unlimited receipts, saved groups for your regular crew and a trip view that adds up every receipt and shows the fewest payments to settle everyone at the end. Cancel when the trip is over.
